Launched in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to reserve john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level domain names remained functional.
